Introduction to Search Engine Optimization: What is Search Engine Optimization?

Tricky question, “What is SEO?”. As with pretty much all Internet related terms, concepts, and concepts, the term “SEO” does not have a unique definition and is a foggy concept in most people’s minds.
Still, what is search engine optimization? Since there is no definitive and fully understood definition of “SEO”, the only way to go is to look at several definitions and try to combine them in order to get the right perspective.

Wikipedia: “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a set of methodologies aimed at improving the visibility of a website in search engine listings. The term also refers to industry consultants who implement optimization projects on behalf of customer sites.”

Fakezilla: “Changes made to a website’s content and code in order to increase its rankings on search engine results pages and directories. These changes may include rewriting the body copy, changing the title or meta tags, removing frames or Flash content and searching for incoming links.”

Web Search Workshop: “The term used to describe the marketing technique of setting up a website to enhance its chances of ranking at the top of results for a search engine once a relevant search has been performed. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website, including the content and structure of website copy and page layout. HTML meta tags and submission process.”

6am Media: “The process of optimizing web pages so that they rank higher in the search engine for targeted keywords with the ultimate goal of generating more revenue from the website. There are many SEO techniques. In general, these techniques can be categorized as in- On-page optimization, on-site optimization, and off-site optimization There are also two schools of SEO: white hat SEO and black hat SEO Black hat SEOs are those that push the boundaries of SEO and use some questionable or prohibited techniques (according to the guidelines) These black hat SEO techniques are also known as spam.”

NOVA Website: “Shortcut for Search Engine Optimization. This is the process of making a website suitable for search engines. Search engine optimization is mainly used to increase rankings in SERPs, and effective SEO can increase the potential of your website and bring in more traffic.”

Thousands of additional definitions are available, almost the same as many of the “SEO gurus” you’ll find on the Internet (“Problem guru” is actually the title of another article that will be published soon).
As you can see, no definition is the same as the other, but they all tend to converge to a certain common understanding.

There are many techniques and tools used to achieve SEO goals, and they should not be included in the definition.

Since it is not correct to define a concept by its tools, here is a definition I came up with after long deliberation. The suggestion is to define SEO as:

SEO = An acronym for “Search Engine Optimization”, the process of optimizing, tuning, and gaining online awareness of a website, in order to deliver targeted visitors and ensure high conversion rates.

When done properly, SEO activities should be:
– make search engines crawl the site;

– make search engines index the site;

– ensuring a high ranking among the SERPs (search engine results pages) for certain keywords;

Achieving a high page rank;

– Driving target traffic.

Achieving high conversion rates among site visitors.
